Breast Surgery Melbourne
What are the different types of breast surgery?
Breast Surgery comes in many different forms and choosing the one that is right for you will depend on your situation, as well as your personal preferences. Not all breast surgeries are for cancer removal, of course. Some people choose to have breast reconstruction, augmentation or reduction for cosmetic reasons and sometimes both of those reasons can be combined together.
Types of breast surgery for cancer removal
Breast conserving surgery
One of the most common surgeries for breast cancer removal is breast conserving surgery – also known as lumpectomy. This breast surgery involves the removal of cancerous tissue as well as surrounding healthy tissue to ensure nothing is missed. Women are often recommended for radiation therapy in conjunction with this.
When a surgeon performs a mastectomy they are removing the entirety of both breasts. It is usually the preferred method of removal for large area cancers or if there are one or more types of cancer present.
Women who have mastectomy surgery in particular, may also choose to have breast reconstruction as often these procedures can have undesirable outcomes as an isolated procedure. Dr Yap’s breast surgery in Melbourne specialises in the combination of aesthetic surgery combined with cancer removal surgery, which is known as oncoplasty.
Lymph node removal
With some cancer diagnoses it can be necessary to remove parts of the lymph nodes to ensure or rule out any instance of cancer spreading to the lymph nodes, which can be common.
Types of breast surgery for cosmetic reasons
Some other reasons people may seek breast surgery include the following types of aesthetic surgeries:
- Breast implant
- Breast augmentation
- Breast reduction
There are many Melbourne breast surgery clinics, but not all of them offer the kind of oncoplastic approaches that Dr Nicole Yap’s clinic does. Find out more about her work at https://www.drnicoleyap.com.au/
